Epigenetics and evolution

What if the methylation status of DNA can be seen as a means of switching from competitive to cooperative survival mechanisms?

Competitive mechanisms appear adequate survival tools in conditions characterised by limited resources.

Cooperative mechanisms appear adequate for life in an environment of abundance.

Fitness in evolutionary terms is a measure of the adequacy of the balance between competitive and cooperative mechanisms. Excessive competition and excessive cooperation will either adjust or fail to maintain the dynamic equilibrium.
